Skills and Drills Participants Return to Homecoming Conference Designed to De-Mystify College Life

Feb 12.2013
home-coming-1-8-2013-092

Several dozen college freshmen who had previously attended The D’Brickashaw Ferguson Foundation’s Skills and Drills Conference as high school seniors, returned to attend the Foundation’s annual  Homecoming Youth Conference. The event was held on January 8, 2013, on the campus of Hofstra University. The homecoming conference provided them an opportunity to discuss the ups and downs of their first semester experience. The topics of discussion included: biggest surprises, successes and failures, and the pros and cons of college life.

Overall, the college students liked their experience; however, they were surprised by the amount of responsibility and the level of maturity required, to be successful. They noted that at times they had too much time on your hands, and it was important to be able to manage your time wisely. The college students noted that the faculty can have a sense of humor; however, it was not all fun and games. Students are held accountable for their actions and you no longer have the safety net of parents, teachers, counselors, and high school administrators.  The college students also noted being surprised by the level of diversity on campus and having to live with strangers. They also expressed surprise about the cost of textbooks and noted that the scholarship from the D’Brickashaw Ferguson Foundation helped offset these expenses.

Then the conversations deepened. The students revealed their successes and failures in their first semester college experience. Many discussed actually failing classes for the first time ever, and what that was like. Others discussed failing to have good study habits and getting lost on the giant college campus (everything is not in one building anymore). For the most part, the students were able to adjust and noted that being involved in clubs and extra curricula activities helped because they were able to make friends with others who shared their interests and who were experiencing some of the same challenges.

Finally, the “D’Brickashaw Ferguson Foundation Homecoming Youth Conference” gave the college students an opportunity to discuss what aspects of the “Skills & Drills” mentoring program helped them the most. The students really benefitted from time management skills and how to focus and study assignments. They also learned to adapt their learning styles, network, and how to effectively use college resources. In reflecting on their experiences, they wished they had more information on other scholarships, had a better understanding of core curriculum, and had a tutorial on the importance of meeting with an advisor and how to select classes. This discussion not only helped the students, it also helped the Foundation’s organizers adapt their curriculum for future “Skills & Drills” programs.

DFF Build-A-Bike lands in Freeport, NY

Dec 28.2012
On Saturday, December 15th, the Incorporated Village of Freeport was excited to host The D’Brickashaw Ferguson Foundation “Build-A-Bike” program. This event took place in the Restaurant Lounge at the Freeport Recreation Center located at 130 East Merrick Road, in Freeport.

A new bicycle is on almost every child’s wish list, unfortunately, in these tough economic times, every parent can’t afford to buy their child a new bike. Each December we are happy to be able to make a few wishes become reality. Each December children ages 9-12 will gather to build brand new bicycles with help from adult volunteers.

The children come to the Build-a-Bike workshop thinking they are building bicycles for children less fortunate than they are. What the children don’t know is that they will actually get to keep the new bicycle. The surprise announcement will be made after each child finishes building their bicycle. While the Build-a-Bike Workshop is a lesson on teamwork and community involvement for the children, it’s also a lesson on giving back for the adults.

In addition to the children being awarded the surprise, they also received a free helmet and bike safety tips.”—The D’Brickashaw Foundation

Its that time again Build a Bike 2012

Dec 15.2012

Mother Bethel AME Church will host the 3rd Annual D’Brickashaw Ferguson Foundation Build-A-Bike Workshop for children in the Philadelphia community this Saturday December 8, 2012, at 10am at Mother Bethel located at 419 South 6th Street. Ten school-aged children (ages 9-12) will build bicycles with brand NEW, unassembled parts donated by the D’Brickashaw Ferguson Foundation (http://www.DBrickashawFergusonFoundation.org). “A new bicycle is on almost every child’s wish list,” says D’Brickashaw Ferguson. “Unfortunately, in these tough economic times, every parent can’t afford to buy their child a new bike. We are happy to be able to make a few wishes become reality.” The kids will build the bikes with help of adult volunteers from the Mother Bethel AME Church mentoring program. The children are from Nebinger Elementary located at South 6th and Carpenter Streets, the school “adopted” by Mother Bethel in August 2011. Every child in the school qualifies for the “free lunch” program and families struggle with resources. Mother Bethel is one of several community partners helping to bridge the gap for students and families. The children will come to the Build-a-bike workshop thinking they are building bicycles for children less fortunate than they are. What the children don’t know is that they will actually get to keep the new bicycle. The surprise announcement will be made after each child finishes building their bicycle. While the Build-a-Bike Workshop is a lesson on teamwork and community involvement for the children, it’s also a lesson on giving back for the adults. “Our denomination and our church recognizes the importance of mentoring young children,” says Rev. Mark Tyler, Pastor of Mother Bethel. “By working with the D’Brickashaw Ferguson Foundation, we are able to make a difference in the lives of children in need right in time for the holidays.” The motto for the D’Brickashaw Ferguson Foundation is “building communities one brick at a time.” The Foundation, among other things, awards academic scholarships to students across the country. It also gives grants to churches to maintain edifices. Supporting Mother Bethel’s Build-a-Bike mentoring program is another brick in the community building. “We’re excited about partnering with Mother Bethel and helping families in need at Christmas,” says Ed Ferguson, D’Brickashaw Ferguson’s father and Chairman of the Board of Directors for the D’Brickashaw Ferguson Foundation. “’Showing God’s love in action’ is a part of the foundation’s mission statement. Having mentors and children working together in this Build-a-Bike workshop is evidence of His love.” Mr. Ferguson and his wife, Rhunette, are also officers and members of Mother Bethel AME Church. In addition to the children being awarded the surprise, free, new bicycle they build, the kids will also receive a free helmet and bike safety tips. D’Brickashaw Ferguson sat at a table inside the employee break room, surrounded by the handful of people who had helped him transfer his ideas onto paper.

On the second floor of a Barnes & Noble in Carle Place, just five days before he reports to training camp in Cortland, the Jets’ left tackle spoke of his latest effort to give back to his Long Islandcommunity: a children’s book.

At a book launch Saturday morning, Ferguson introduced “GO GREEN!,” the first installment in his “Brick’s Way” series, which aims to “entertain children while inspiring them to make a difference in their community.”

“We wanted to put out a message we could be proud of,” said theFreeport native, who was joined by his wife, Kirsten, his mother, Rhunette, and Mascot Books co-founder and CEO Naren Aryal.

Ferguson took his post behind a lectern and began reading “GO GREEN!” aloud to dozens of children and their parents. They had all come to see their hometown hero, and in turn, Ferguson took his time signing every book, football and jersey after the reading.

SKILLS AND DRILLS – MAY 21, 2012

On May 21st, 2012 The Foundation hosted its 3rd annual Skill And Drills Event under the umbrella of its Mentorship Program. High school seniors from about eight different high schools on Long Island, accounting for about 200 students, came together at Hofstra University to attend a conference which dealt with “How To Prepare For First Semester Experience In College” as well as learn how to interact with others of totally different background and culture.

Through the Brick Bowl aspect of the event, presentations ,answers and questions sessions, students earnestly and eagerly embraced all that the conference had to offer.
